Rio Tinto Yarwun Aluminium Refinery Improves Safety with Solar Lighting
This particular lighting project within the Rio Tinto Yarwun Aluminium Refinery in Queensland; Australia, was originally initiated out of a need to increase the safety on-site in a number of different carparks, by bringing the lighting up to Australian standards, eliminating any dark spots and reducing the risks of slips, trips, and falls. Earthtrack were engaged to provide a long term, low-cost solution for lighting, based on our previous experience with Rio Tinto and our extensive experience in innovative, on-site solar lighting solutions over the past decade.
Some of the issues that the project presented while installing lighting were the trees in the carpark that projected shade and darkness in the area, and the slopes and uneven ground in some locations. Both of these issues meant that we needed to strategically place our lighting towers to avoid the shade, and to ensure the tower would be on a flat, stable base, while still illuminating dark spots and complying to the relevant Lighting Standards outlined, which was our main priority. The solar panels also needed direct sunlight to avoid issues with charging efficiency.

Earthtrack’s Solar Lighting Towers presented the perfect solution for Rio Tinto Yarwun in this application, due to their flexibility of placement, and the ability to eliminate the high costs of trenching and running power cable to traditional lighting poles, as well as the fast turnaround that our solution presented.
The specific solar lighting solution utilised for this project was the Earthlight ELION Solar LED Street Light, in single and twin configurations across different carparks.
These solar lighting towers have a compact design, as well as an easy to install and maintain design, which meant they were the ideal solution for the client in this project.
Our team’s flexibility with lighting design and the ability to use varying beam angles on these towers also assisted the client in achieving their overarching goal of reaching Australian Lighting Standards.
